Fukd ID #5 - bis

Our contribution to the FukD Id series reflects the way our sound has developed in two contrasting directions, as showcased on our forthcoming album “Return to Central”.  The first, fresh direction is the lush, chilled-out sound of “Brainclouds”.  We consider it an anthemic, end-of-the-night track, unlike anything we’ve done before, and was borne out of the freedom that the FukD ID series gave us to experiment with our tried and tested sound.  “Brainclouds” contains the only guitar on the record, an acoustic one at that, and the only non-mechanical drums.  It’s probably fair to say that even the most hardened Bis fan will find it difficult to recognise, but several of “Brainclouds”’ key elements are also present on the full-length album.

The remaining three tracks find us exploring our continued fascination with the dancefloor.  “The European” is the kind of early 80’s electro-pop which has been a key Bis inspiration ever since “School Disco”, but with a harder, rougher edge and a sparse minimal sound that we perfected during our recent “electronics-only” performances.  It’s our latest attempt at creating the perfect electro pop record, albeit with an extended DJ friendly coda this time!  “Mamelodi Sundown” is a more laid-back experience, juxtaposing a jerky, funked-up backbeat with lush orchestration and a big “lighters-aloft” chorus, while “Situation” is our offering to all the fans of our “Electric Café” club, an ultra-minimal, strictly for the dancefloor juggernaut ride that we may or may not have nicked from New Order circa “Power, Corruption and Lies”.  Although Manda does seem to vocally resemble Jello Biafra on this one!

We are proud to be part of the FukD ID series and are grateful to Chemikal Underground for their faith in us a full five and a half years since “Kandy Pop”.  Our next album, “Return to Central” will follow on Artful Records early in 2002.
