Notes:
An exploration of the folk tradition in 2012, Bowerbird brings a remarkable group of artists to Cork for two special shows featuring full performances from each.
Friday 29 June: Andy Irvine / Sam Amidon / Adrian Crowley / Serafina Steer
Saturday 30 June: Aidan Moffat & Bill Wells / Martin Carthy / Malcolm Middleton presents Human Don’t Be Angry / Serafina Steer
Andy Irvine is one of the great Irish songwriters and singers, with a voice that gets to the very soul of Ireland. From Sweeney’s Men to Planxty, and then from Patrick Street to Mozaik, Andy has been a world music pioneer and an icon for traditional music and musicians.
Sam Amidon presents his intuitive reworkings of gospel, folk songs, and hymns with storytelling, field recordings and video. With banjo, guitar, and his gentle, eerily deadpan vocals, Amidon gives voice to the love, hardship and heartache in these age old songs.
Adrian Crowley is regarded as one of Ireland’s finest songsmiths, lyricists and multi-instrumentalists. He is currently recording his latest album to follow the Choice Prize winning Season Of Sparks.
Serafina Steer is a semi-experimental harpbased singer-songwriter from London.
The debut album by Bill Wells & Aidan Moffat is a special thing, full of gorgeous, jazz-inflected love songs and has recently been awarded the inaugural Scottish Album of the Year Award. Wells is the Scottish multi-instrumentalist, composer and collaborator of many. Moffat is a man of many projects, from solo material to his band Aidan Moffat & the Best-Ofs, his experimental work as L Pierre, Lucky Pierre and his long history as one half of iconic Scots duo Arab Strap.
Martin Carthy is a much loved and enormously influential figure in English folk music and has been for over 40 years. He has appeared and recorded solo, as a duo with fiddler Dave Swarbrick, and in bands The Watersons, Steeleye Span, Brass Monkey and Blue Murder.
Malcolm Middleton, former Arab Strap guitarist, returns with a new project, Human Don’t Be Angry, exploring guitar instrumentals and ambient atmospherics.
Curated by Adrian Crowley and Gary Sheehan for Cork Midsummer Festival.
